Radeon RX 9070 GRE: Performance close to RTX 5070, only for Chinese market

The Radeon RX 9070 GRE is the latest addition to AMD’s desktop graphics card lineup, a special version of the graphics card with a Navi 48 chip and 12GB of memory, designed exclusively for the Chinese market. Reviews show that this card ranks next to the RTX 5070 in performance, but its pricing policy raises questions.

What kind of performance to expect from the AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE?

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE features 3,072 stream processors, a 15% reduction over the full-featured RX 9070. The GDDR6 memory (12GB) runs on a 192-bit bus, resulting in a 33% reduction in throughput. AMD has set the official price at RMB 4,199 (approximately €500), which is only 7% less than the classic RX 9070.

In benchmarks from Chinese reviews, the card performs very close to both the RX 5070 and RX 7900 GRE. Frame rate differences are often only single digits:

  • RX 9070 GRE vs RTX 5070: about 95% performance
  • RX 9070 GRE vs RX 7900 GRE: almost identical performance
  • RX 9070 GRE vs RTX 5060 Ti 16GB: up to 27% more powerful

It’s also interesting to see how ray tracing performs – where Radeon has traditionally lagged, the RX 9070 GRE keeps up with the RTX 5070 in titles like F1 24, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077.

RX 9070 GRE pricing strategy and market constraints

Although AMD officially promised a 6% performance increase over the RX 7900 GRE, the tests don’t confirm this. The GPU only matches its predecessor or the RTX 5070 in most games. Combined with a price tag of around 500€, its position on the market looks embarrassing.

The RX 5060 Ti 16GB, to which the card is often compared, does offer more memory, but it lags behind by up to 30% in real games. The lower performance of the RX 9070 GRE compared to the RX 9070 is particularly noticeable in memory throughput and reduced core count.

Temperatures and power consumption remain within the norm – the tested model reached around 51°C under load and 229W in FurMark. It is thus an efficiently cooled card, but one that needs to be priced correctly to find its target customer.

Verdict: Good card, but unclear future

On paper, the RX 9070 GRE appears to be a solid choice for 1440p gaming. It puts the RTX 5060 Ti to shame and catches up to the RTX 5070 in most games. However, with price and availability (exclusive to China), AMD isn’t threatening the competition just yet. Whether the card will make it to the global market at a more attractive price remains questionable for now.
