ASUS has suspended shipments of the ROG Matrix RTX 5090. The premium card has a quality problem

The ROG Matrix RTX 5090 was supposed to be a showcase of the best that ASUS can bring to the RTX 50 generation, but that situation has quickly changed. According to retailer Inet.se, the manufacturer has suspended all shipments and notified customers that it has identified an unspecified “quality issue” that requires a new revision. Pre-orders therefore remain suspended and availability is currently unclear. For a product that ASUS itself refers to as a halo model, this is an unusually major intervention.

The ROG Matrix RTX 5090 is one of the most exclusive graphics cards on the market. ASUS has equipped it with a massive air cooler with four fans – three in the front and one in the back – that improves cooling of the VRM (Voltage Regulation Module, not VRAM memory) and the back of the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) by directing air around the hottest components. The card also uses liquid metal for maximum efficient heat transfer between the GPU and the heatsink base. The price of around $4,070–4,400 puts it in the enthusiast and collector’s category, so the news of its recall for rework makes it all the more surprising.

Possible reasons for the ROG Matrix RTX 5090 recall

Although ASUS hasn’t officially revealed what exactly caused the suspension, the dealer’s communication suggests that the problem is concrete and serious enough to require a new revision of the entire model.

The most commonly cited cause is precisely the use of liquid metal, which can offer superior heat transfer but requires absolutely precise application and a 100% reliable seal. With the extreme temperature fluctuations that arise with RTX 5090 class GPUs, this is an extremely sensitive part of manufacturing. With older generations, the community has already seen instances where liquid metal has been applied unevenly, leading to temperature and reliability issues.

There is also speculation surrounding the power supply portion of the card. ROG Matrix models have always been known for having a massive VRM(Voltage Regulation Module) with a high number of phases that handle extreme currents and temperatures with such a powerful GPU. If there is even a small manufacturing deviation in such a design – whether in PCB fitting, component selection or testing – it can lead to instabilities that the manufacturer doesn’t want to risk in mass distribution. Possible complications with the new power connector have also been mentioned in discussions, but so far there is no evidence that this is the real reason for the suspension.

The only confirmed information so far is that ASUS has decided to act preemptively. Shipments have stopped, a revised version is in the works, and as of today it is unknown when the ROG Matrix RTX 5090 card will return to the market.

Did you know that the VRM (Voltage Regulation Module) is one of the hottest parts of a graphics card? MOSFETs and chokes routinely reach 80-100°C, so manufacturers have to blow and cool them intensively to keep the card stable.

Conclusion

Suspending shipments of the ROG Matrix RTX 5090 is an unusual move for such a product, and one that naturally garners attention. Even though it is a model with a minimal share of sales, it affects the overall perception of the RTX 5090 generation. However, from our perspective, this is not a cause for concern – rather, it is a standard precautionary intervention to prevent a potential problem from reaching customers.

This leaves users with a simple choice – wait for an updated version of Matrix or reach for available models from MSI, Gigabyte or Gainward that run without any reported complications. For most gamers, the classic RTX 5090 remains the more reliable choice until ASUS releases a patched edition.
