Framework Laptop 16: A new era of Gaming Laptops with modular RTX 5070 graphics card

Framework Laptop 16 RTX 5070

The idea of buying a gaming laptop and simply upgrading it with a new graphics card a few years down the line has sounded like science fiction until now. Most gamers know the reality – laptop performance becomes obsolete over time, and if you want more FPS or better support for new games, you need to reach for a brand new device. However, Framework is changing the rules of the game and delivering a solution that pushes the boundaries of traditional laptops. That’s because the Framework Laptop 16 has become the first gaming laptop to allow you to easily swap out the GPU module – and specifically for the RTX 5070, developed in collaboration with Nvidia.

A new era of modularity with the Nvidia RTX 5070

Framework is a brand that has been profiling itself as a pioneer in modular laptops since its inception. Their vision is to give the user the ability to replace or upgrade almost any component without having to buy a whole new laptop. The first Framework Laptop took the spotlight in 2021, and the Framework Laptop 16 model arrived in 2024 with an AMD Radeon RX 7700S graphics card. Even back then, it was a unique solution as the graphics card was designed as a standalone module. But now comes the real breakthrough – a new module with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 graphics card.

What does the RTX 5070 module bring?

The biggest news is the ability to replace the AMD graphics with the new Nvidia RTX 5070 with 8GB of GDDR7 memory. The framework claims a 30-40% performance increase over the previous solution. The module has a power consumption of 100 W and also brings an added bonus – a USB-C port with DisplayPort output and power options. This makes the laptop an even more flexible work and gaming station.

What’s also interesting is that this module isn’t just for the latest version of the laptop. Framework has ensured backwards compatibility, so users of older Framework Laptop 16 models can also buy it. This is exactly the philosophy the company has long been pushing – sustainability and longer device life.

Ryzen AI and new cooling

The new Framework Laptop 16 isn’t just about graphics. It’s also getting the latest generation Ryzen AI 300 “Strix Point” processors, namely the Ryzen 7 350 and Ryzen 9 HX 370. These are chips with a focus on efficiency and AI computing, while Framework has also added a revamped cooling system. It uses Honeywell’s special PTM7950 material to better transfer heat, and new fans to keep the laptop quieter even under high load. The entire solution is designed for a 45W TDP, so it’s a noticeable step forward in terms of noise and temperature.

Another interesting feature is the 240W USB-C charger. This makes Framework one of the first manufacturers to be able to power a powerful gaming laptop via USB-C without using the classic “barrel” connector. For the user, this means fewer cables, more versatile charging and greater convenience.

Price and availability

The new version of the Framework Laptop 16 starts at $1,499, which is slightly more than last year’s model with AMD graphics. When configured with the Nvidia RTX 5070, the price increases depending on the trim, but the RTX 5070 module itself is also available separately for around $700. Framework has also kept the original Laptop 16 model on sale, which now starts from $1,299 – $100 less than at launch. For gamers who prefer AMD, the Radeon RX 7700S module also remains on offer for around $449.

In the US, pre-orders for the new model with the RTX 5070 kicked off at the end of August 2025, with the first shipments arriving to customers in November. What the RTX 5070 module means for the future of laptops

The Framework Laptop 16 with the Nvidia RTX 5070 module proves that gaming laptops don’t have to be “consumer products” anymore. Thanks to the modular solution, users can customize and upgrade their device over time, instead of buying a completely new model every two or three years. This solution saves money, extends the lifetime of the device and reduces e-waste at the same time.

The RTX 5070 module not only delivers higher performance, but also shows a new direction in notebook development. It’s a demonstration that even big players like Nvidia are ready to support a modular approach that can change the entire notebook industry. If this concept is successful, it’s possible that modularity will become a mainstream part of gaming devices and other manufacturers will follow suit. For gamers and tech enthusiasts alike, this is a clear signal that the future of laptops may be much more flexible and durable than we have been used to.
