Huawei MateBook Fold – Innovative Foldable Laptop of the Year 2025 Unveiled in China

Huawei MateBook Fold

In May 2025, Huawei officially unveiled its boldest innovation in the portable device segment – the Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Design. The device debuted on May 19, 2025 in China and pre-sales started from June 6. It is exclusively available in the Chinese market for now, but it is already being heavily discussed internationally.
The MateBook Fold offers a revolutionary concept, a device that can be used as a classic laptop or, when folded, as a tablet. The foldable 18-inch OLED display, high brightness and premium specs make this model a premium piece that could be one of the most innovative laptops of 2025.

Design and foldable display

The biggest attraction of the Huawei MateBook Fold is its foldable OLED LTPO display that pushes the boundaries of traditional laptops. When unfolded, it offers up to 18 inches of workspace with a 3.3K (3296×2472) resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. When folded, the screen changes to a more practical 13-inch format with a 3:2 aspect ratio, so you can also use the device as a tablet or compact notebook.

The display reaches a typical brightness of 700 nits and up to 1,600 nits in HDR mode. Nits are the unit of display brightness – the higher the value, the more visible the image, even in direct sunlight. By comparison, conventional laptops only offer 250 to 400 nits, so the difference is significant. Higher brightness not only means better readability in challenging conditions, but also more vivid colours and stronger contrast when watching HDR movies or editing photos.

The body of the device looks modern and premium. It weighs just 1.16kg (excluding the keyboard), so it remains portable despite the large display. Huawei has used luxurious materials and offers multiple finishes – official ones include the sleek Shadow Black and the lighter Sky White. Some sources also mention other shades, such as Cloud Blue or Forged Shadow Black, suggesting that the manufacturer may list different color versions depending on the region.

Huawei MateBook Fold performance and features

Inside the Huawei MateBook Fold, we find 32 GB of RAM and fast PCIe Gen4 SSD storage with a capacity of 1 TB or 2 TB. This combination offers plenty of power for multitasking, working with large files or streaming high-definition video.

The Huawei MateBook Fold uses an internal graphics solution within the Kirin X90 chip (referred to as the “Maleoon 910 GPU” in some sources). This means that it’s not a separate gaming graphics – the device is optimized more for productivity, creative work and multimedia use, not heavy AAA gaming.

The operating system is HarmonyOS 5, which is closely intertwined with the Huawei ecosystem. The large foldable display allows for efficient multitasking – for example, having two or three apps open side by side. For users who already own a Huawei smartphone or tablet, this is an advantage because the devices easily share content and apps with each other. On the other hand, the absence of Windows can be a limitation for some professional programs or games available exclusively for the Microsoft platform.

The 74.69 Whr battery promises decent battery life considering the large display and supports USB-C charging. Huawei has also integrated a number of advanced technologies into the device: four microphones for clear video calls, multiple speakers with surround sound, support for touch gestures, and the ability to connect a wireless keyboard, which in some packages comes directly with the device. Of course, the AI features of HarmonyOS are also included.

Who the Huawei MateBook Fold is for

The Huawei MateBook Fold is a device that targets more demanding users who want more than a regular laptop. With its flexible display and foldable design, it will especially appeal to creatives – graphic artists, designers or photographers who appreciate the ability to work on a large screen while using tablet mode for quick sketches or notes.

It’s also ideal for executives and professionals who travel frequently to present their projects. The sleek design and premium materials also make MateBook Fold a prestigious work tool.

On the other hand, for users who require full Windows app compatibility or RTX graphics-level gaming performance, this model may not be the right choice. The Huawei MateBook Fold is not primarily designed for gaming, but rather for work, creation, and representation.

Price and availability

The Huawei MateBook Fold is only available in the Chinese market for now. The price is around CNY 23,999 (approx. $3,460 USD) for the 1TB SSD version and around CNY 26,999 (approx. $3,890 USD) for the 2TB SSD variant.
A global launch has not yet been announced by Huawei. However, it is likely that if demand is high enough, the device will eventually appear in the US as well. Interested parties should keep an eye on the company’s official announcements, as availability tends to be limited and region-dependent for similar premium products.

Competition among foldable laptops

The Huawei MateBook Fold is not the first attempt at a foldable laptop, but it is one of the boldest. Previously, devices like the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, which introduced the foldable display concept back in 2020, have already hit the market, and its newer generation is still selling. Lenovo is mainly focusing on the business segment and work deployments, with an emphasis on reliability and Windows compatibility.

Another competitor is the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED, which impressed with a large 17-inch screen and the ability to use the device as a tablet or laptop with a detachable keyboard. Although it has brought several innovations, its high price and limited availability have so far prevented it from achieving mass success.

Compared to these models, the Huawei MateBook Fold looks more modern – it offers a larger 18-inch display with higher brightness, a thinner body, and a HarmonyOS ecosystem that is deeply connected to other Huawei devices. While Lenovo and Asus stick more to the Windows platform, Huawei has gone its own way and bet on building its own ecosystem.

Alternatives: 2-in-1 laptops

The Huawei MateBook Fold, as well as the other foldable models we mentioned above, are not currently sold on our market. However, that doesn’t mean that users don’t have interesting options available to them. There are 2-in-1 hybrid laptops available in the US that offer flexibility thanks to swivel or detachable displays and can adapt to both work and play.

Attractive models include:

These devices are also sold in the United States at major retailers, including Amazon, making them a practical alternative for anyone looking for a laptop and tablet in one.

Huawei MateBook Fold summary

The Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Design is one of the most exciting devices of 2025. The foldable OLED display, premium workmanship and high memory configuration make it one of the unique products on the market. While it remains exclusive to Chinese customers for now, it’s already showing the direction the future of laptops may be heading.

If you’re looking for a device that combines laptop, tablet and luxury design into one package, even if it’s not yet available outside of China and doesn’t offer the gaming power of high-end graphics, the MateBook Fold is a revolution that provides a glimpse into the future of laptops.
